This is an open invitation for everyone to participate in a student art show to be held at Bracken Village on Saturday, May 1st between the hours of 1 and 4 p.m. Under the tutelage of Shelley Fluke, this years Fiesta Poster Art Contest winner, each class is structured to create a comfortable non-competitive atmosphere where students experience the magic and joy of artistic expression.
My Art Starz students will have two of their favorite pieces of art to display in the art show. Other activities will include a table of rubbing templates (great for the little ones); a scavenger hunt, art bingo, a drawing, and our notorious constructions contest. We always have ice pops for everyone. The kids always enjoy the candy counter in the Red Barn.
There is plenty of parking at Bracken Village, a collection of houses, barns and outbuildings depicting the look and feel of life in southern Comal County a century ago.
After you view the wonderful artistic accomplishment of our student, you might want to visit the many shops and cafes housed in these beautiful buildings. Located at18771 FM 2252 (Nacogdoches Rd) in Bracken, TX, it’s a short drive from San Antonio.

Great ART ideas for Christmas!
CHALK PASTELS
I recommend SOFT pastels by Mungyo. You can get a box of 32 for $5.99 or a box of 64 for $10 - $12 at Hobby Lobby. Look on-line www.hobbylobby.com for a 40% coupon!
You can buy a pack of black construction paper to go with it, or a pad of colored charcoal paper. I do NOT recommend white paper for pastels. Black or other dark papers really enhance the colors of pastels
PAINTING
Hobby Lobby has nice paint kits. I would not recommend oils for elementary kids unless they have had lessons. Oil painting is a challenging medium. We offer a class in the summer.
A nice set of acrylics or watercolors would be fine. Make sure to get brushes. You don’t have to spend a bundle on a decent paint brush. $1.00 - $5.00 per brush is adequate.
We often use (in class) the APPLE BARREL 2 oz. bottles of acrylic paint. They are inexpensive but the colors are vibrant. You can get these at HL and also at WalMart.
Note: Acrylics will ruin clothes and carpet, so use with CAUTION!
SCRATCHART KITS
Kids LOVE scratchart!
You can order through my website www.myartstarzproducts.com and have delivered. Or you can buy the same small sets at Hobby Lobby. The kits are approx $6.00
Great stocking stuffer!
BOOKS
I highly recommend Ed Emberly for young children. I use many of his concepts in my lessons. Usbourne has several great art books. You can go on-line and order www.usbournebooks.com . There is a drawing series at Hobby Lobby by Lee Hammond. My personal favorite is “Draw Real Animals”. For cartooning, Mark Kistler has several books offered on-line or at local bookstores
I buy most of my books through www.amazon.com or half price books.
I have my own drawing book “The Icky Sticky bug book” which reinforces some of the basic drawing techniques from class. It is $6.00 + postage. This price is ONLY for my art students. I will personally sign to your child(ren)
CLAY
Sculpy clay is a lot of fun. Kids can make things with brightly colored clay and you bake in the oven to harden. Hobby Lobby, Michaels, and WalMart
Beware of those fabulous “looking” art kits that you see everywhere. They are beautifully packaged. They are okay for fun, but the quality is not so good, and your child may be frustrated. We use professional grade supplies in class, and even a 6 year old will notice the difference.
A SEMESTER OF ART!
I often have grandparents tell me they provide art lessons for their grandkids for birthday and Christmas presents. I have a little “gift card” that you can pick up in class if you would like something to wrap for your child to open on Christmas morning
